Ajax faced Panathinaikos in the final, entering the game as the favorite. Dirk Wouter van Dijk gave the Jews an early advantage with a goal in the fifth minute to set the tone. They continued to dominate the game and finally got the winning goal in the 87th minute through Arend Haand.
The Dutch side won the competition for the next two seasons to make it three in a row, becoming the first football club from the Netherlands to achieve this feat and one of the few European clubs.
