The atmosphere in Dortmund was fenomenal, only a bit dampened by Leverkusen winning 3-2. We had seats in the middle of dortmundfans, so we too had hide our joy over Leverkusen's victory.”

The highlight of everything Dortmund achieved during this period came in 1997 when the club won the UEFA Champions League, beating Juventus 3-1 in the final to claim their first European Cup. While they won another Bundesliga title in 2002, the club went through financial struggles that nearly resulted in bankruptcy. The club bounced back by the early 2010s, with Jurgen Klopp bringing an exciting, high-energy style of play to the team. The club won back-to-back league titles in 2011 and 2012 as well as a DFB-Pokal title in 2012, completing another historic double.
Union Berlin was founded in 1966 but found the going a little tough in the earlier years, having had to settle for lower tiers of German football. Because of the club’s humble beginnings, it couldn’t compete with some of the biggest and most established teams in the country.
Many years of constant struggles turned into something worthwhile for the club when it earned a promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in the 2018/19 season. The club quickly adapted to the demand of German top-flight football, finishing mid-table in its debut season. In the 2020/21 season, Union Berlin defied expectations by finishing seventh in the league, earning the right to play the UEFA Europa Conference League the following season.
Two years later, Union Berlin impressively finished fourth in the Bundesliga, the club’s highest finish in the top flight. This granted them a spot in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in its history, giving everyone associated with the club a glimpse of hope!
