Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, and Philippe Coutinho were brought in for more than $350 million and failed to make a real impact at the club. Coutinho was sold to Aston Villa for less than $20 million, Griezmann returned to Atletico Madrid for around the same fee, while Dembele was sold to PSG for a little more than $50 million.
Things were so bad financially that Barcelona was forced to let Messi leave for PSG on a free transfer as the club couldn’t afford to renew his contract despite the Argentine’s willingness to take a significant pay cut. This spelled the height of decline for the club, with former president Joan Laporta returning after Bartomeu resigned.
