It was the first time in more than a decade that Bayern Munich finished a campaign without winning a trophy, leading to Tuchel’s dismissal at the end of the season.
For everything Bayern Munich has achieved, it’s a big surprise that it only rose to prominence in the 1950s, later than Borussia Dortmund and other big clubs in the country. However, since its first taste of a league title in 1932, the Bavarians have made it a mission to dominate German football, which is precisely what they’ve done.
They also hold the record for the most DFB-Pokal titles won, with 20 of those cup titles in their cabinet. The club has also made exploits in Europe, having won the European Cup/UEFA Champions League six times. The German giants won three consecutive Champions League titles from 1973 to 1976, becoming one of the few teams to achieve this feat after Real Madrid’s historic five-trophy haul in the 1950s.
Despite controlling the game, Bayern lost the 1999 UCL final to Manchester United. This loss handed the Red Devils their first continental treble. However, Bayern Munich returned to the competition two years later stronger, beating Valencia 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time.
