This led to the Kraichgauers finishing third in the Bundesliga in the 2017/18 season, which earned them a spot in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history. While this achievement may seem random to other clubs, it was a big deal for Hoffenheim, a club that competed in the fifth division of German football as recently as 2000.
Although all the efforts haven’t translated into trophies, Hoffenheim remains one of the most consistent teams in German football. With Hopp’s backing, the club finished seventh in the league last season and secured a spot in this season’s Europa League. Sadly, the campaign didn’t start with Hoffenheim only winning one game after its four opening games in the competition.
